Arnold Kling has been writing about what he calls Progressive Corporatism and the Resistance. This split in thinking may be more important than the traditional “left vs right” division. Hardly anyone believes in socialism anymore, but a lot of folks think that government should have a much stronger role in economic life. This was a popular notion in the 30’s, particularly in Gernmany and Italy, but today’s thinking seems to at least have the virtue of learning from past mistakes. Call it neofacism if you want to be impolite. Some will object that government intervention in the auto industry is simply pragmatic. Perhaps. Now only if they can make the trains run on time.
