Democrats’ Problems

The Democratic Party is now going to have real problems. As Megan points out, they will have no one to blame but themselves for government actions over the first two years of the Obama administration. My hint to Republicans: use the filibuster sparingly. Let the Democrats foul their own nest then explain it to the voters in two years.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The problems start now with Obama’s staff. The President-Elect must appoint about 1100 people who require Congressional approval. That won’t be easy, even with a Democratic Congress. Like Republicans, Democrats are a diverse lot, each having their own constituencies and agendas. Each appointee will have a price. By the time P-E Obama is finished, he will have had to compromise much of his own agenda just to get a functioning government. And then the real fun begins.

The Republicans failed by trying to govern like Democrats. The Democrats will also fail by trying to govern like Democrats. I’d prefer to see both parties get their acts together and actually represent a set of principles that we voters could choose between. Instead, we’re likely to see a bunch of career politicians looking after their own hides, principles be damned.
