Rampant Gloom

Over at Cafe Hayek (and elsewhere) they’re discussing the widespread sense of economic pessimism. I’ve noticed this too, and it’s not just in economic arenas where the smallest glitch gets elevated to the status of “crisis”. Of course, political office seekers want to say that problems are everywhere and that they are the solution. But it’s more than that. Witness the recent hysteria over children’s toys, airplane wiring, and possible food contamination. Maybe it’s the 24 hour news cycle – without a new “crisis”, there’s not enough news to fill the time. Maybe we’ve just become so comfortable that the slightest discomfort is classified as pain. Maybe we’ve become a nation of wimps and whiners. Maybe I’m just getting too old – it’s tempting to write something like “back when I was a boy….”.
