I also think its the presence of OPEC and their "price setting" that gets people thinking of oil in monopoly terms and/or corruption terms.

You are absolutely right. The problem is in people not thinking but rather accepting the "heroic" decisions. One can never say, a proper way might be counter-intuitive, after all one that "seems" right can be flawed many times.

We went from a period of excess regulations (1968-1982) to a period of excess deregulation (1982-2005).

The Central Bank is supposed to regulate the commercial banks. One failure under Greenspan was the refusal to insist that banks ONLY LEND MONEY TO QUALIFIED BORROWERS.

This is the basis for problem now unwinding . . .

I generally agree, however, the direction which the government should take in any economic or social issue can be gleaned through a careful examination of the Constitution. If someone can show me where in the Constitution it says the government should be the ultimate re-distributor of the wealth of private citizens, that individual citizens should be isolated from the effects of their own poor choices through the confiscation of other people's well-earned and carefully preserved fortunes, then I'll buy it. No, on second thought, I won't. Yes, changes in policy should be done gradually, but any change which uses government as a means of overriding the basic laws of economics, or even the laws of nature, should never be made at all. Today's politicians wouldn't know the Constitution if someone took it and it's heavy bullet-proof glass enclosure out of the vault at Ft. Knox and whacked them upside the haid with it.

Reports don't make you glum about the economy -- inflation, depreciating assets, and poor wage growth does.

Non wage compensation? Co-payments have been going up, as coverage going down. Its taking more and more of the employees paycheck to stay even That's called falling behind.

If you are an investor, you will quickly learn that believing the blather in WSJ OpEds are an expensive hobby.

Thinking Things Through is a great idea. Look more closely at the data

Obama is taking McCain's advice and will be going to Iraq to see what he has been missing for a few years now. I hope the Hillary snipper fire that she ran from isn't happening as he gets off plane! He's flipping and flopping enough already!
