Healthy, Wealthy, and Unwise

I’m glad I’m not the only one who appreciated the superb article today in the WSJ. It’s true that the standard of living for the average American was simply unimaginable two generations ago. The perverse thing is that the wealthier we become, the louder the voices get urging the destruction of what makes us wealthy. Go figure.

Landsburg makes an interesting point about health care in the full article. Would you rather have 1970 style health care with 1970 prices, or today’s health care with today’s prices? Today’s health care at today’s price is a screaming bargain – and that’s with the market being hamstrung by horrendous government involvement. It would even a better situation if politicians would mind their own business. Instead, we find people howling for even more government involvement, which will have entirely predictable ill effects. We not only seem to want to destroy what makes us wealthy, we want to destroy what keeps us healthy. Go figure.
